Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk in someone else’s shoes for a day? Or perhaps you’re contemplating a career change, but you’re unsure what a typical day in the field is like. Check out Vocational Biographies. This online database boasts a collection of "day in the life" stories of people in a variety of professions.

Search for specific occupations or explore career pathways. You’ll find information about what kind of education you’ll need, time commitments, and links to further your research. If you’re in the mood to browse, some notable (and very interesting) professions include Bat Remover, Dude Ranch Manager, and Jingle Writer.

This collection of online streaming videos includes a variety of subjects related to technology and trades, including: automotive technology, building/construction, cosmetology, computing technology, electronics, horticulture, manufacturing, technical communications, welding, and much more!

Extra! Extra! Read All About Proquest!

paper-clipart-boy-6.pngThis week we've had several requests for help finding old newspaper articles. While we still carry microfilm, gone are the days of searching page by page through old newspaper scans.

Proquest National Newspapers Core makes it easy to quickly find old articles, movie reviews, obituaries, and ads. You can search by subject, location, date range, document type, and more. Titles include the Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post

On Monday, we were able to find an old recipe someone remembered seeing in 2004. On Thursday, we explored book reviews for old Stephen King novels. What will you be able to find?

Discover New Authors During Black History Month

Were you inspired by yesterday’s annual African-American Read In here at the library? Black Thought and Culture is an excellent database for finding similar selections to keep you reading! Black Thought and Culture contains 1,297 sources with 1,098 authors, covering the non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. Where possible the complete published non-fiction works are included, as well as interviews, journal articles, speeches, essays, pamphlets, letters and other primary source material.

Keep Your Motor Running

Icy roads and long commutes can make car maintenance a real challenge during Chicagoland winters. Perhaps you’re waiting for a call from the body shop--or, you’ve decided to fix it yourself. The College of DuPage Library has resources that can help you keep your car in working order.

Check out Motologic for car repair tips and tricks. This free database is available from on campus computers. MotoLogic is an online service information system designed for the professional automotive technician. Data is farmed directly from the OEM service sites. This site compliments the information found in AllData. Learn how to perform repairs on a variety of vehicles. Each procedure has a skill level rating, so you can decide if you’re ready to tackle trickier repairs on your own.

To access Motologic from on campus computers, click on the Sign In button. Motologic is not available off-campus at this time.

Has your Netflix queue been reduced to a short list after binge-watching your way through winter break? Check out some of our free online databases. Stream movies directly to your browser using your COD staff or student library card.

The Kanopy video collection includes a variety of subjects across many disciplines but its strength is feature films, indie titles, and documentaries.

The PBS Video Collection includes documentary films and series from the history of the Public Broadcasting Service covering many educational disciplines, including history, science and technology, diversity studies, business, and current events. It includes Frontline, NOVA, American Experience, Odyssey, and many films by Ken Burns and Michael Wood.

Are you looking for something new to read over winter break? Our e-book collections make it easy to read or listen to a variety of popular books. OverDrive has the latest titles in popular fiction and non-fiction. The OverDrive app is available for Android, Chromebook, iOS, Kindle and more. OverDrive also has a desktop app for Windows and Mac. It's time to start thinking about your New Year's Resolutions! Why not learn a new skill in 2018? College of DuPage Library can give you a head start with our online databases.

Check out LearningExpress Library to brush up on reading, writing, and math skills. Prepare for certification tests or placement exams using their video guides and tutorials. There are also opportunities to take practice exams so you'll know what to expect on the day of the test. You'll need to create a free account to take the practice tests.

Add to your resume (or just impress your friends) using Lynda.com. Become an expert in thousands of topics like Photoshop or coding. Lynda allows you to design your own course of study and work at your own pace. Create a free account to keep track of your progress.

Use this tool to learn about socio-economic conditions, religions, and customs of other countries. There are options to use comparative country data to build your own graphs and charts. Stalking Our Ancestors: Biography Resources

Next time you’re researching someone from the past, head over to our American National Biography resource. You can find it on the Biography databases page. You can perform a specific search for someone, or search by gender, nationality, occupation, place of birth, and more. Please note that this collection only features biographies of the deceased.

Not finding what you're looking for? We have other Biography resources on hand!

Academic Onefile has a special drop-down box in their advanced search, allowing you to search by Biography or Autobiography. Or, search for the person's name to find articles and mentions in the media.

Academic Search Complete allows you to search by document type. In addition to biographies, you can find obituaries, interviews, and reviews of the person's work.

Not in the mood to read? Check out Academic Video Online. Use the search box to find information about the person you're studying, or gain background knowledge in the field they were famous for.
