Tips for Accessing Off-Campus Library Resources and Databases

The Library provides access to virtually all of our electronic resources from off-campus locations for students, faculty, and College staff. Sometimes users will encounter issues getting into our materials from off-campus. Below are Frequently Asked Questions and common problems.

If you aren't sure of the browser you are using or if you have cookies enabled, check your system.

These messages refer to potential issues with the Library's security certificate.  You can safely accept the risks and continue onto the Library website.  Here's how to accept risks in each of the major browsers:

Chrome:  Look for the little shield icon next to the URL bar at the top right. Click on the shield and accept the risks.

Internet Explorer: Click "Continue to this website."  Follow the prompts to accept the risks.

Firefox: Click on the icon at the beginning of the URL in the address bar.  There should be a "This connection is untrusted" warning. Click "I understand the risks" and/or "Add an exception" for the page you are trying to enter.  

Safari: Click on  "This connection is untrusted. Safari cannot verify the identity of this website"  Click on "Show Certificate." Then accept the risks. 

Clearing the browser history / cache fixes 99% of all problems our users have with accessing resources from off-campus. The most important things to clear are your browsing history and temp files.  You do NOT have to delete your saved passwords or form-fill data. If you've never cleaned your browser before, these steps can take up to five minutes.

Important: Make sure you RESTART your browser after you've cleaned it. 

Internet Explorer

Click on Tools> Internet Options > Browsing History > Delete

Google Chrome

Click on the three little dots at the far upper right. Choose History >History. Then choose "Clear Browsing Data,"


Choose Tools. Choose "Clear Recent History"


Choose History. Click "Clear History." This will delete your cookies, temp and cache files. De-select the Top Sites box.

The Library recommends that you use Firefox, Safari, or Chrome for library research. Internet Explorer is not supported by some major database vendors because of security and basic functionality issues. Your barcode is the 14 digit number on your library card which starts with 21304.

You can get a temporary library barcode at:

If you have lost or misplaced your library card, contact the circulation desk at 630-942-2106 to talk with a staff member about your Library account. 

If your library card is not current or has too many fines, you'll not be able to use the databases from off-campus. Call the circulation desk at (630) 942-2106 to have your card reinstated.

Your browser accepts a cookie every time you log in to the databases. If you made a mistake the first time you tried to get in, the browser remembers.  To easily fix this, clear your browser history and completely close your browser. See the "how to clear your browser history" question below for more information. 

You may have to contact your company's system administrator to access our proxy server from your work computer. Ask your system administrator to allow traffic to and from:

Use your browser's TOOLS menu to change the security settings.  You will need to set your browser to accept cookies to use the Library databases from home.  If you feel uncomfortable about this, you can clear your browser history after every session.
