Assignment:

Listening Response

Critical listening and reading project (minimum of 800 words in length) Listening (600 word minimum) + reading (200 word minimum)

In Unit I, we explored African music, as well as the African-influenced music of the Caribbean. Now, I’d like you to listen to something new and reflect upon the basic principles of African music that we considered in Unit I.

Choose one CD of African music—preferably one with rather extensive liner notes—from the COD library holdings. (You can procure the CD from another library or a music store, but you must make sure that I have access to that CD in our library.)

Listening (minimum of 600 words): Read the liner notes and listen to the CDs. After you have listened carefully, select four tracks from one CD and write at least 150 words for each track. In your commentary, you should use the material and information given in the liner notes, but only as a point of departure. If you quote from the liner notes, those words must appear in quotation marks, and you may not count those words as part of your minimum written word count.

The goal is to see what insights and illuminating observations you can make about the music. At this point in the semester, we will have examined both African and Caribbean music; you should use your understanding of African music to throw light on the CD tracks. I am requiring you to use CDs owned by our library, and to return them when you hand in your paper, so that I can listen to the tracks myself. In this way, I can examine your commentary, as well as that supplied on the liner notes.

Reading (minimum of 200 words): Read the CD’s liner notes and write a summary, calling my attention to any interesting facts you might have learned.

Don’t forget to identify the title of the CD, the artists (whether for the entire CD or the individual tracks), and the call number. Be sure that you actually give me the call number—one that will probably begin with MF or ML—and not the bar code number.

Here is a list of African music in the COD Library that can be used for this assignment.
